Golden Dawn is free for this weekend, so my fellow Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday Folk, here’s a piece from that my paranormal romance…
In this piece, Herald has just demanded a clear answer from his father about how long a certain woman in the tower has been there…
His father’s dark brow twitched at Herald’s commanding tone. Ștefan slowly faced him, his pale lips narrowing and speaking his father’s displeasure louder than any words could’ve done.
Herald flinched under his father’s intense stare. Younger siblings had died for lesser defiance. Where had the insolence to speak in such a fashion come from?
“It’s been six, maybe seven, hundred years.” The corner of his father’s mouth rose in a smile. “I forget the precise length of time.” The dark orbs of his eyes grew icy. “Is a man not allowed to forget things in his dotage?”
Family and blood.
After 1100 years, these simple words mean everything to Herald. His life has been ruled by keeping his siblings safe, keeping them from becoming prey whilst feeding on the weaker. His failures have been many and measured by those he has lost. People like his twin brother.
There has always been another enemy.
Just who the enemy is comes into question when Herald meets the dangerous, angelic creature he is to guard. Wondering where his true loyalties lie is a dangerous thought. No matter whether he chooses family over the heart, it will mean death.
Only the right choice will ensure the life taken is not his.
Remember, it won’t be free tomorrow, so grab it now.
You convey so much about the characters and backstory in just these few paragraphs. I could feel the tension in the room. Great snippet!

Sounds like a scary dad, even in his “dotage.” That’s a long time to live, let alone be a captive!

Well, hey, once you pass the thousand year mark, it’s all downhill.
And yeah, it is a long time to us. But not that long to a being who’s almost as old as the mountains.

(Got so excited about the book that I downloaded it, closed the tab, and then realized I’d forgotten to comment.)

WOW! I’m not sure I have words just yet for this… The line about younger siblings dying for less insolence was a huge intrigue. So is the seven hundred years. Just how old are these guys and this prisoner? And who is the prisoner? And are they human or not? And… I think I might have to go read this book now…

How old? Well, Herald is around 1100 years and Daddy’s about sixteen years older… As for the prisoner… As old as dirt, really.

Just a few hundred years! That’s a long time to forgot about somebody.

Not so much forgotten as casually tossed to one side. But yes.

No one knows, really. Herald’s around 1100 years old now… give a decade or two.

She was locked for 600 or 700 years and he doesn’t remember how long? I mean even if he is that old, at least for her 100 years more or less should matter.

Well, after the first few centuries he probably had other things on his mind, like mauling innocent humans. It’s a tough job, but if he doesn’t feed on them and make his family bigger, then no one will.
In all seriousness, it does matter to her, even if she tries to hide it.
